We’re finally getting around to resurrecting our blog… It’s been over a year since we posted anything. Once we settled in Cape Town with jobs, life just didn’t seem exciting enough to be blog-worthy anymore! But with family and friends scattered so far, it’s definitely time to start posting again, to share photos of what we’re up to every now and then.
Some major events of the past year…
September 2009: Julie’s parents and sister came to SA from the US, and we had a marriage blessing ceremony and wedding reception on a farm outside of Murraysburg.
November 2009: Julie’s cats Raya and Abu arrived from the US (Alaska), and they settled in quickly to life in Cape Town.
December 2009-Feb 2010: Willem’s friend and fellow arborist/climber from Alaska, Greg, came to stay with us for a few months for a working holiday. He worked with Willem at the tree business, and travelled around the Western Cape a bit to do some rock climbing, as well. His friend Adam joined him here in December, and his friend Anna visited in February. We loved having the company, and meeting Adam and Anna.
December 2009 and February 2010: weekend trips to the Cederburg mountains, about 4 hrs north of Cape Town
January 2010-June 2010: Robyn the Welshman worked with Willem at the tree business while he and his girlfriend Elizabeth were in SA on an extended working holiday. We very much miss Rob and Liz now that they’ve returned to the U.K. Rob just started up his own tree business in Wales, check out his website, designed by Liz: http://www.atwelltrees.com/
April 2010: boat cruise from Durban – Cape Town on the MSC Sinfonia with the Avenant family to celebrate Willem’s Pa’s 50th birthday.
July 2010: moved into a new house (another rental) in Walmer Estate, just outside the city centre in Cape Town. Close to where we were living in Woodstock, but a much bigger house, and we were able to move the tree business vehicles and equipment to our garage here. August 2010: 3-week trip to the U.S. to visit Julie’s family and friends. We flew into Maine where Julie’s sister lives, drove down to Michigan for a family gathering, spent 2 days in Chicago sight-seeing, went to Julie’s parent’s house in Kewanee, IL, then up to Julie’s best friend’s house in Minneapolis, and flew home from there.
September 2010: newly resolved to enjoy more of the outdoors activities in and around Cape Town, we’ve been climbing Lion’s Head peak twice a week, hiking at Silvermine National Park, and just returned from a weekend on the West Coast, where we saw Langebaan, Paternoster, slept at Beach Camp in the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, and drove through the West Coast National Park.
We’ll catch up with posting pics of some or all of the above in the days and weeks to come, but they won’t necessarily be in chronological order!
